What's better than supporting locally grown, seasonal produce? Not using petroleum to bring it to market.
The folks at Sustainable Ballard are helping make the Sail Transport Network possible. Independent sailboat owners have set their sails for Sequim and the Kitsap Peninsula to bring local produce back to the docks of Shilshole Marina in Ballard. Sustainable Ballard member/sailor Fulvio Casali wasn't exactly singing Christopher Cross' hit "Ride Like the Wind" on his last trip back from Sequim. It took him 36 hours to get back to Seattle and it took just 10 hours to get there. Relying on Mother Nature can have it's mishaps but he returned with 650 pounds of produce from area farmers to a group of anxious subscribers.
Word is spreading fast in the community and with three trips under their belts, the Sail Transport Network hopes to make this a regular thing. I'm hoping for fair weather in February to pick up my box of produce by bike.
